‘Twas three days before Christmas, and all through the New York Knicks’ house, a trip to Vegas was hardly a douse.

Knicks captain Jalen Brunson has once again earned the Eastern Conference Player of the Week Award, the ninth such title of his career and second this season. Brunson becomes the first Eastern rep feted twice this season and second overall next to Nikola Jokic of Denver.

This latest honor closes out a decorated week for Brunson: things began out in Las Vegas, which saw the Knicks (20-8) become the latest victors of the NBA Cup in-season tournament. Brunson took home MVP honors for the knockout round in Sin City after scoring 25 points in the 124-113 win over San Antonio.

Two nights later, Brunson helped the Knicks earn a quantum of revenge in Indianapolis, sinking the game-winning basket in a 114-113 triumph over the Indiana Pacers, the team that has ended each of the last two Knicks seasons.

Though Brunson struggled in a Friday loss to Philadelphia, he more than atoned for it when the Miami Heat came to visit to close the weekend: the point guard lived up to his moniker in the Sunday showdown, scoring 47 points to set a new career-high at Madison Square Garden. That thrilling capper allowed Brunson to finish off the week with averages of 31.3 points, 8.0 assists, and 5.3 rebounds (not counting the Cup final against San Antonio).

The Knicks defeated the Heat 132-125 and will comfortably sit in second place on the Eastern Conference playoff bracket heading into the Christmas landmark.

Brunson’s antics have proven to be routine to Knicks fans at this point, but this particular POTW title served as a historic occasion: Brunson has moved into sole possessions of second place in franchise history with nine such titles, breaking a tie with Carmelo Anthony. Only Patrick Ewing, the leader at a dozen, remains.

Brunson will get a late start in protecting his title, as he will be held out of Tuesday’s game against the Minnesota Timberwolves (8 p.m. ET, MSG) due to “right ankle injury management.” He’ll likely be back on Thursday afternoon when the Knicks engage in their relatively annual Christmas clash, which features Cleveland this time around.

Brunson shares this week’s POTW with Western rep Jaren Jackson Jr., who averaged 27 points and eight rebounds for the Memphis Grizzlies.
