To the presumed delight of New York Knicks fans everywhere, Jalen Brunson will stick to sports.
At least 29 people wanted to promote Brunson from captain to mayor, as official results from the 2025 New York mayoral vote saw that output of city voters attempt to write the point guard into office on Election Day. Twenty-seven wrote in Brunson while two others also nominated “Jaylen Brunson” for the race headlined by conventional candidates Andrew Cuomo, Zohran Mamdani, and Curtis Sliwa.
In video from SNY, Brunson had a chance to address the people’s vote, disappointing his base by remarking that he “would not consider” a run at Gracie Mansion “at this point of [his] life.”
“We have a great fanbase,” Brunson, hardly able to stifle his laughter, said as the Knicks prepared for Tuesday’s NBA Cup quarterfinal against the Toronto Raptors. “It’s funny, it’s cool to see, but, yeah, I’m going to stay in my lane.”
The news of Brunson’s political aspirationsโor lack thereofโnaturally made their way back to Josh Hart, who had an expectedly cheeky take on the “funny” proceedings.
While Hart, perhaps the top option to become the point guard’s deputy mayor, was “surprised” that Brunson couldn’t reach 30 votes, he suggested that Brunson run for office when he retires. Asked if Brunson would do a good job in the role, Hart remarked that “probably not, but it’d be funny to see.” (h/t SNY)
Since arriving in the summer of 2022, Brunson has made the Knicks great again, thrusting the team back into contention and establishing himself as a premier top option on an NBA roster. In his first year as Knicks captain, a position previously filled by Carmelo Anthony, Patrick Ewing, Willis Reed, and more, New York reached the Eastern Conference Finals for the first time in a quarter-century.
If Brunson does eventually throw his hat into the ring, the competition will be stiff: in addition to the Knicks captain, several New York voters also offered their write-in votes to fellow metropolitan athletic stars to Jaxson Dart, Sabrina Ionescu, Aaron Judge, and more.
