If Anthony Davis was the subject of one shocking winter trade, the New York Knicks could be involved.

Responding to a fan query about the Knicks’ trade market, SNY insider Ian Begley said that the team could at least check in on the status of Davis, whose future is in flux amidst the fall of the Dallas Mavericks.

“This is stating the obvious, but Iโ€™m sure the Knicks would at least check in with Dallas if/when Anthony Davis becomes available,” Begley theorized. “You may scoff at the idea, but the Knicks want to win a title this season. If Dallas is offering Davis at a below-market cost, Iโ€™m sure the Knicks will at least give the move some thought.”

Davis, of course, was one of the headliners of one of the most shocking trades in recent professional sports memory, one where Dallas shipped franchise face Luka Doncic out to Los Angeles. The Mavericks (5-13) still haven’t recovered from the deal, which indirectly led to the firing of general manager Nico Harrison.

Begley does clarify that “nearly all” teams will call the Mavs if they wind up shopping Davis. However, the Knicks have established themselves as one of the few undisputed “win now” teams in the league, so special attention will be paid to their trade block, especially if a name like Davis is involved.

Begley believes that the Knicks are more likely to make an addition in the backcourt, and his post came before New York lost Landry Shamet to an apparent shoulder injury during Saturday’s loss to the Orlando Magic. But interior physicality was also an issue in the 133-121 defeat in Central Florida, so the Knicks could keep their eyes open for any upgrades.

In the end, however, the Knicks have little, if any, future draft capital to part with, so any move for Davis (or another marquee talent) would almost undoubtedly force them to move some name-brand talent. Davis’ injury woes would also give the Knicks pause: further ailments have limited him to playing only 14 games since the infamous trade, including only five this year due to calf issues.

While the New York Knicks could indeed express interest, Anthony Davis may be better off being a concern for another team.
