As Mitchell Robinson entered the 2025-26 season still battling the effects of a severe ankle injury and missing time on and off while managing the recovery, it looked like second-year German big man Ariel Hukporti would step into a legitimate role in the New York Knicksโ rotation.
He had become a fan favorite in limited minutes last season before his own injury, and many expected that momentum to carry over.
Instead, the opposite has happened.
After logging 18 minutes in the Knicksโ regular-season opener against the Cleveland Cavaliers, Hukporti has barely seen the floor under head coach Mike Brown. Since opening night, his appearances have been limited exclusively to garbage time.
That leaves New York with only one optionโthe G-League.
Why the Knicks Should Send Ariel Hukporti to Westchester
Through the early stretch of the season, Ariel Hukporti has barely touched the floor. The 23-year-old big man is averaging just 1.1 points and 2.1 rebounds in seven minutes a night. For a raw, athletic seven-footer trying to find his place in the league, that kind of usage doesnโt help; it stalls his growth.
Right now, sitting at the end of the bench is doing more harm than good. The Knicks can assign him to Westchester without risking waivers or roster gymnastics, and itโs the move that makes the most sense for both his development and the teamโs future.
He needs real minutes โ not NBA garbage-time minutes
Even in the tiny sample he’s been given, you can see why the Knicks like him. The flashes are real. He looks the part of a long-term rotation big: active, mobile, and disruptive at the rim.
His per-36 numbers tell the same story:
- 5.1 points
- 10.9 rebounds
- 3.2 assists
- 1.3 blocks
They show the outline of a player who could help the Knicks down the road. But potential doesnโt become production without reps. Hukporti needs game speed; he needs to feel pick-and-roll coverages over and over, and he needs to make mistakes in a setting where the consequences arenโt so severe.
Less than two weeks ago, Knicks head coach Mike Brown essentially admitted that Hukporti doesn’t have a spot in his rotation.
“I don’t know. I can probably play 10 guys, and right now, he’s not in the top 10, so he’s just gotta keep himself ready,”ย Brown said. “And when his number’s called, he’s just gotta go out there and he’s gotta play hard on both ends of the floor for his minutes.”
If Brown doesnโt see a rotation spot for Hukporti right now, then keeping him glued to the bench isnโt helping anyone. The kid needs minutes and room to grow, and he can get just that in the G-League.
Sending him to Westchester isnโt a demotion. Itโs the one place where he can actually play, make mistakes, and figure out who he is as an NBA big.
The flashes are there. The tools are fundamental, but he just needs a legitimate development program.
And right now, that runway isnโt with the New York Knicks. Itโs with the Westchester Knicks, where he can finally get the reps he deserves.
