In the NBA basketball system, backcourt-based offenses are considered especially heinous. In New York City, the dedicated shooters who investigate these vicious deficits are members of an elite squad known as the New York Knicks. These are their stories.
There was no NBA action on NBC’s prime time slots on Thursday night but that didn’t stop Jalen Brunson from making on impact on the peacock-branded airwaves.
Brunson was a guest star in the latest episode of “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit,” appearing on the 599th episode of the long-running police procedural entitled “Forsaken.” It’s the latest culmination of the friendship between Brunson and series star Mariska Hargitay, one of the most prominent witnesses to the point guard’s MVP turn in the recent NBA Finals.
(Spoilers for Law & Order SVU: Season 28, Episode 5, “Foresaken,” follow)
Unlike other athletes making primetime postings Brunson didn’t play himself but rather Det. Jay Madison, who assists Hargitay’s metropolitan heroine Olivia Benson in an assault case.
Carrying a surname referencing the Knicks’ famed home of Madison Square Garden, Det. Madison is introduced at a Brooklyn pizza parlor and is immediately congratulated by Benson on a promotion.
With the special guest claiming that he “focused on [his] goals, gave 110%,” to a smirking Benson, one could easily assume it’s a conversation between a Knicks superfan and franchise face rather than their respective characters.
True to point guard form, Brunson provides an assist and performs in the clutch: Benson turns to Madison for information on a suspect, as Brunson’s character was the arresting officer in the potential perpetrator’s prior run-in with the law.
Once revealing that the suspect had the weapon used in the more recent incident, Benson labels Madison “the best” and departs, armed with one of the case-cracking clue that allows a trial to advance.
Much like his day job, Brunson kept things in the family: his father and Knicks assistant coach Rick appears in the scene as a passerby shortly before Benson enters.
Brunson and Hargitay have become one of New York’s most reliable duos: it has taken a lot to faze Brunson during his time with the Knicks, but he has long admitted that he was starstruck by seeing Hargitay, a longtime Knicks fan, courtside at Madison Square Garden as a longtime “SVU” viewer.
Brunson previously cameoed in a pre-recorded segment during Hargitay’s turn hosting the Emmy Awards and Hargitay was on his parade float when the Knicks’ long-awaited championship was commemorated in June.
The full episode is available to stream on Peacock. Brunson is back on his regular patrol on Saturday when the Knicks face the Cleveland Cavaliers (8 p.m. ET, MSG/NBA TV).
