The New York Knicks bucked recent trends and kept things comfortably assured on their side in a Friday night fracas in Wisconsin.
A scorching start from Jalen Brunson was enough for the Knicks to set up one of the most easy-going wins of the season, as they mastered the Milwaukee Bucks by a 127-98 final at Fiserv Forum. It allowed New York to emerge on the positive side of a three-game road trip prior to the start of a March gauntlet.
Brunson made sure it fully mattered how the Knicks started, breaking loose for 22 his 27 points in the opening period alone. Josh Hart was equally busy, scoring 10 of his dozen in the same span as the “Roommates” and Villanova standouts helped render an early 8-3 deficit completely forgotten.
Brunson’s output included the last 11 tallies in the closing 2:48 that established a metropolitan landmark: the point guard and captain ended the first quarter with 7,000 points in his Knicks career, becoming the 18th New Yorker to reach that tally in Manhattan.
From there, the Knicks (38-22) got everyone else involved in the fun.
It took put 19 seconds to establish a permanent double-figured lead after Karl-Anthony Towns’ turnaround double, the first scoring contribution of a 17-point, 13-rebound double-double after he was held without a shot attempt in the first. Brunson briefly got back involved when the Bucks trimmed a 17-point lead back to 10, hitting a three that kick started another run that moved the affair back to 20 by the end of the half, which saw New York lose just two turnovers.
The Giannis Antetokounmpo-less Bucks (26-32) never got any closer than 15 thereafter, reaching that point twice during the third quarter. An early second half breakout amidst a strong two-way game for OG Anunoby essentially exhausted Milwaukee early, as he duplicated Brunson’s early posting with a personal 11-point run of his own. Anunoby hit a trio of triples, countering futile momentum-shifters from AJ Green and Kyle Kuzma before a show-stopping reverse dunk off a feed from Hart.
Each of the Knicks’ five starters ended the game with double-figures in scoring and they were joined by reserves Landry Shamet and Mohamed Diawara, who united for 25 points. All of Shamet’s output came with five three-pointers, part of a 21-of-41 output overall. The Knicks shot better than 50 percent from deep for the first time since Jan. 21’s blowout of Brooklyn and hit at least 20 threes for the second time this month (joining Feb. 11’s blowout of Philadelphia).
With the win, the Knicks secured a win in this season’s three-game series against the Bucks after each side had successfully defended its home floor. Brunson scored exactly 100 points in the trio. Myles Turner led the hosts with 19 points in defeat as they fell two games behind Charlotte for the fourth and final Eastern Play-In Tournament spot.
The Knicks close the weekend with a major challenge at home, as they’ll host the surging San Antonio Spurs at Madison Square Garden on Sunday afternoon (1 p.m. ET, ABC).
