A Rocky Mountain high had nothing on a New York minute on Wednesday night at Madison Square Garden.
Yet another clutch performance from Jalen Brunson proved to be the difference in a star-studded interconference battle, as the New York Knicks took a 134-127 double overtime decision from the Denver Nuggets.
It was the Knicks’ second win in the last 48 hours and their eighth in a row overall, generating their longest winning streak of the campaign.
Tallying 42 points on the evening, Brunson scored all but five of the Knicks’ 15 points earned over a fateful final five played without a fouled-out Karl-Anthony Towns. The latter nonetheless mustered a 24-point, 12-rebound double-double while helping force the Denver franchise face Nikola Jokic to a 1-of-13 out from three-point range.
Wednesday’s game, which never featured a double-figure lead, had a flair for the dramatics: up two in the fifth period, the Knicks (33-18) had seemingly escaped with a win after Jamal Murray’s would-be winner hit only the cusp of the rim but Mikal Bridges was called for a loose-ball foul that allowed Christian Braun to get to the line for the equalizers with three tenths of a second remaining.
That only delayed the metropolitan inevitable, as Brunson once again lived up to his Clutch Player of the Year advertisement.
After losing the Knicks’ opening possession of the sixth frame, Brunson countered Murray’s driving double with a banked tie. He would then give the Knicks a lead with a free throw before boosting it to multiple possessions with a three. Both scores were earned after he got the rebounds on Denver’s misfires.
Despite falling to a Knicks team missing Josh Hart, Denver (33-19) nonetheless made history: scoring 30 points despite his misfires from deep, Jokic also had 14 rebounds and 10 assists, tying Oscar Robertson for the second-most triple-doubles in NBA history (181).
Murray led the Rocky Mountain scorers with 39 points, but it wasn’t enough to avoid the Nuggets’ third consecutive defeat.
An anticipated rematch between the Knicks and Nuggets is scheduled for March 8 at Ball Arena. In the meantime, another incredible test awaits the Knicks on Friday night, as they hit the road to face the conference-leading Detroit Pistons (7:30 p.m. ET, MSG/Prime Video).
