The offseason is already well underway for New York Knicks fans.
After relieving Tom Thibodeau of his head coaching duties, all eyes are on Big Apple basketball. Yes, even with an NBA Finals series well underway. And by the looks of it, the headlines will be bleeding blue and orange for the foreseeable future.
According to Milwaukee insider Gery Woelfel, the Knicks are “preparing to make a tsunami-type offer” to land Bucks’ franchise face Giannis Antetokounmpo.
This rumor comes, of course, on the heels of many rumors surrounding Jason Kidd as a likely candidate for New York’s next head coach.
Kidd was Antetokounmpo’s first head coach, and the two have maintained a great relationship in the seven years since he was fired in Milwaukee.
The Greek Freak is the likeliest NBA star to change homes this summer, so speculation about his future can’t be ignored. Factor in the potential hiring of Kidd, and all the smoke will lead you to a forest fire’s worth of credible context.
Antetokounmpo is coming off his 12th NBA campaign, where he averaged 30.4 points, 11.9 rebounds, 6.5 assists, and 1.2 blocks per game. He also earned All-NBA honors for a ninth consecutive season and has finished no worse than fourth in MVP voting since winning the award in back-to-back seasons in 2018 and 2019.
So yeah, tsunami is the right word here. For the Knicks, that will mean some combination of OG Anunoby, Mikal Bridges, Karl-Anthony Towns, and every first-round pick left in the barrel.
It’s been a long time since New York was so championship-focused. Enjoy this time, Knicks fans, and all the beautiful stresses that come with it.
