With hours to tip-off against the Portland Trail Blazers, the New York Knicks are making two changes to the roster.
According to Stefan Bondy of the New York Post, veteran forward P.J. Tucker’s second 10-day contract has expired without a renewal. But it’s not certain fans have seen the last of Tucker in a Knicks uniform.
The 39-year-old bruiser was brought in on March 8, not to play for New York but to provide a much-needed veteran voice in the locker room.
A 14-year veteran, Tucker was a key contributor to the 2021 Milwaukee Bucks championship team. Since, he’s played for four teams over four seasons, all-but signaling the end of his career.
New York’s hesitance to resign him could be related to the slew of point guard injuries they’ve suffered recently. In addition to Jalen Brunson, Miles McBride and Cameron Payne are also sidelined with injuries.
It’s possible New York is holding out for an update on either of the three absent point guards. Bad news on any front could force them to search the free agent market for a placeholder.
Head coach Tom Thibodeau gave veteran combo guard Delon Wright the start at point guard in the Knicks’ most recent win over the Bucks. And while he did play admirably, that should by no means be considered a long-term solution.
Elsewhere, 2024 first-round pick Pacôme Dadiet is rejoining the Knicks ahead of their matchup with Portland, according to the team’s PR account on X.
Dadiet, who is only 19 years old, has appeared in 16 games for New York this season. He rejoins the team fresh off a 25-point performance for the G-League affiliate Westchester Knicks.
Look for the rookie to get some run against a Portland team currently riding a three-game skid. The team boasts several lengthy wings on the roster, and Dadiet’s most redeeming quality thus far is his defense.
